The sound of the wood rail splintering almost masked the thud of the head falling to the floor, and Alicia began to plummet through the broken railing and into the open air. Max watched as time slowed to a crawl, dilating as Alicia fell; he ran toward her, reaching a hand to stay her fall, but it was akin to swimming through molasses.
